Kisvárdára Nyíregyházán keresztül a 4-es főúton jutottunk el, a város Debrecentől 95 km-re fekszik északkeletre. A főút Kisvárdától nyugatra halad el, a nagy bevásárlóközpontnál lévő körforgalomnál kellett letérni az első lehetőségnél a Városmajor utcára, ami elvisz a Várfürdő mellett, majd egy balkanyart követően a Krucsay Márton utcában folytatódik. A Krucsay utcán nem kellett sokat menni, a második utca a bal oldalon a Vár utca, ami elvezetett minket egészen a vár előtt kialakított kellemes kis parkig. Ha valaki nem akarja ezt a kört megtenni, akkor leteheti a kocsit a Várfürdőnél valahol és onnan is meg lehet közelíteni a parkot és a várat.

A kisvárdai vár területén talált őskori leletek alapján azt feltételezik, hogy a mai várrom helyén egykor földvár állott. A honfoglalást követően az ősi Gutkeled nemzetségből származó Várday család (mely a Báthory családdal közös őstől ered) lett a település birtokosa, amely családot első ízben egy, a XIII. század végéről származó oklevél említ. A család 1415-ben Luxemburgi Zsigmondtól kapott engedélyt egy vár létesítésére, 1421-ben a király városi joggal ruházta fel Kisvárdát. Várday István bács-kalocsai érsek, bíboros – Mátyás király fő és titkos kancellárja Vitéz Jánossal együtt – 1465-ben kezdte meg a vár szinte teljes átépítésének előkészítő munkálatait, amely a bíboros 1471-es halálakor még tartott.

We can reach Kisvárda via Nyíregyháza on the main road 4, 95 km northeast of Debrecen. The main road runs west of Kisvárda, at the roundabout by the big shopping centre we have to take the first exit onto Városmajor Street, which takes us past the Kisvárda Thermal Baths, after a left turn, continues into Krucsay Márton Street. We don't have to walk much on the Krucsay Márton Street, the second street on the left is already the Castle Street, which took us all the way to the pleasant little park in front of the castle. If one doesn't want to go this way around, one can leave the car somewhere at the Kisvárda Thermal Baths and approach the park and the castle from there by foot.

Prehistoric finds in the area of the Kisvárda castle suggest that there was once a castle on the site of the present castle ruins. After the conquest, the Várday family (from the ancient Gutkeled clan, descended from a common ancestor with the Báthory family) became the owners of the settlement, first mentioned in a document from the end of the 13th century. In 1415, the family received permission from Zsigmond of Luxemburg to build a castle, and in 1421 the king granted Kisvárda the right to build a town. In 1465, István Várday, Archbishop of Bač-kalocsa, Cardinal - together with King Matthias' chief and secret chancellor, János Vitéz - began preparatory work for the almost complete rebuilding of the castle, which was still in progress at the time of the Cardinal's death in 1471.
